Motor vehicle accidents account for 39% of spinal cord injuries

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2023 | Car Accidents |

The most common cause for spinal cord injuries in the U.S. are as the result of motor vehicle accidents.

Alabama-based research group the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) reported that injuries stemming from such crashes accounted for 39.3% of spinal cord injuries between 2015 and 2019. (Falls were second at 31.8%.)

Challenges with such a life-changing injury

Currently in the U.S., an estimated 291,000 people live with a spinal cord injury, according to the NSCISC.

Many of those people face a series of surgeries to keep them alive or in attempts to regain their mobility, long physical and mental therapy sessions, a lifetime of personal and professional adjustments and expensive medical bills.

Victims usually are forced to adjust to this injury as a result of an abrupt and sudden incident. In the cases of motor vehicle accident victims, such injuries sometimes are the result of the actions of negligent and careless drivers.

Those negligent drivers may be drunk, speeding, distracted, fatigued or just flat out flout any traffic law. It is a shame that their actions turn upside down the lives of others and their families, who now face with an abundance of challenges due to such a life-changing injury.

Pursuing legal action against negligent parties

The difficulties stemming from a spinal cord injury, sometimes, are permanent. They may prevent victims from ever working again or even holding their children. This is why it is crucial for a spinal cord injury victim to pursue legal action against negligent parties. They deserve compensation, and a skilled, experienced and empathetic attorney will attempt to secure a rightful amount through a settlement or at a trial.
